Overview

PREP is a 1 year Paid Post-baccalaureate research opportunity serving three incoming post-bac researchers from groups underrepresented in science. The program offers a full-time lab position, along with career and professional development training sessions, networking opportunities, and laboratory mentorship. Scholars will be matched to a UCSF lab based on best fit of their science interests and compatibility with a UCSF faculty mentor.  PREP scholars will also become full members of the PROPEL program and included in all curriculum offerings, professional development workshops, and social events.

Program goals

After completion of the post-bac program, participating scholars will be prepared for graduate school admission, successful completion of a research-focused doctoral degree, and careers in the biomedical research workforce. Admitted scholars are offered:

  • Research Experiences: Hands-on exposure to research and individual mentoring in your field of interest.
  • Courses for Skills and Career Development: Advanced courses in a specific discipline, research technique or research area, and/or courses or workshops to develop scholarly potential and increase confidence. See our curriculum page for the growing list of courses we offer.

Other benefits

  • On-campus housing:  PREP scholars are eligible for UCSF on-campus housing.
  • Graduate program application fee waivers:  PREP scholars qualify for a fee waiver for applications to graduate programs at UCSF and other institutions.
  • UCSF Fitness Center membership:  PREP scholars qualify for a discounted membership rate at the UCSF Fitness Center
